AN OPEN LETTER TO HOT TOPIC

To whom it may concern:
Your new “Define Cosplay” t-shirt has come to my attention, and I could not in good conscience stay silent.
“Do it right or not at all” is the furthest you can get from the core principles of those (like myself) who cosplay. Our motto? COSPLAY IS FOR EVERYONE.
Maybe you think you’re being cute by calling out cosplayers. Maybe you saw an opportunity and jumped on the bandwagon to make a buck. I get it. But you are insulting thousands of cosplayers across the US and around the world by selling this shirt.
If you had talked to a single person who actually cosplays for the love of it before putting this shirt on the market, we would have unanimously told you to stuff it where the sun don’t shine. By supporting this anti-cosplay view you’re not only hurting those of us who love the hobby, you’re hurting yourselves.
Because what do you sell? Rainbow Dash and Pikachu hoodies, Mockingjay pins, Wonder Woman dresses, Ice King hats – need I go on? These are ALL forms of cosplay. So are you insulting yourselves and trying to undermine sales of these cosplay items with this shirt? Or are you saying that your mass-produced, made-in-China versions of popular characters are the “right” way to do it and no one else should bother?
Next time you create a shirt, do yourselves a favor and poll the community you’re about to address. Cosplayers are not going to buy this arrogant, bigoted, holier-than-thou shirt – and several people I know have now boycotted Hot Topic for making it in the first place. If you do sell any, it will only be to those who mock those of us who devote hours, days, weeks and months to creating costumes as close to perfection as we can make them.

I agree: sew it properly or prepare to have a nipplegate in the middle of the dealer’s hall. Seriously, though.
